First, a spring in the barrel of the pencil lets the lead slide back into the pencil instead of breaking if too much vertical pressure is applied. Second, another spring in the tip dynamically extends the lead guard to protect the lead when too much sideways pressure is applied. It may sound complicated, but it really works!
